Michelle Obama: The New Marie Antoinette?

August 9, 2010

It’s been quite a week for FLOTUS (First Lady Of The United States) Michelle Obama and the youngest of the first couple’s daughters, Sasha. But more on that in a moment.

First, it’s good to be back. The two-week hiatus was a good opportunity to veg out and try to ignore the reality of our country’s abysmal economy, the unrelenting unemployment, the runaway train-ride towards being overwhelmed by illegal aliens while the federal government sues anyone who wants to enforce existing laws designed to combat the problem.  Ah yes, how nice it’s been to ignore it all. Kind of like, you know… being President.

As for the first lady, I’m so happy that Michelle had a chance to get away from the drudgery of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. And Spain is such a great place to spread the wealth around, isn’t it?

Uh, perhaps for them but not, apparently, for us minions:

In July, Michelle Obama showed us all how concerned she was with the desperation of businesses in the Gulf states who are losing hundreds of millions of tourism dollars due to the BP Oil Spill. In a warm show of community unity, she traveled to the Florida Panhandle, hit hard by the oil spill and boldly stated that families who are “looking for things to do with their kids this summer… this is a wonderful place to visit.” And she sounded so sincere, didn’t she?

Then she went back to Washington to pack for a week-end trip in Maine. You may remember that was the trip where the family dog got his own chartered plane to join the family.

Last week, in true Marie Antoinette fashion, she jetted off on the Vice-President’s 757 Jumbo Jet with youngest daughter Sasha, a few dozen of her closest  friends, a complete staff of secret service  and attendants and spent the last 5 days in a luxury vacation area on the Mediterranean Sea in southern Spain…

But she’s back home now and all is well. If she hurries, she’s got just enough time to do a new PSA (Public Service Announcement) encouraging us minions to vacation in the Gulf of Mexico before she has to jump aboard Air Force One with the entire family for yet another vacation, this one on Martha’s Vinyard. I wonder if the dog will have his own jetski.

Of course, she’s entitled to a vacation, and all first families have taken them. My point is simply this:  Adding up hotel suites, private cottages by the sea, meals and transportation while there probably added roughly several million dollars to the coffers of Spain. It could have been the coffers of the businesses in the Gulf of Mexico.  And it would have prevented the inevitable comparison to Marie Antoinette.

But that would be an unfair comparison… While Michelle wants to put OUR kids on a strict diet, at least Marie Antoinette is purported to have said “Let ’em eat cake.”

Pass the twinkies…

One Giant Step… For Islam?

July 20, 2010

Ahhh… the good old days.  Remember way back when NASA focused on things like space and didn’t have to concern itself with the self-esteem of any particular religious group? Back when our Presidents understood that NASA’s charter was about exploring “The Final Frontier” and not radical religious alignment? For example: 41 years ago today:

Recently, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden (and several confirming sources), stated The White House wants NASA’s focus, moving forward, to be on making sure Muslims are satisfied their contribution to math and science is being appreciated.

Our Tongue-In-Cheek department reports The White House is now trying to deny they ever told Bolden any such thing, but refused to address a rumor that they plan to rename NASA from National Aeronautical and Space Administration to National Association for Sharia Advancement. Their new motto: “That’s one small step for man, and One Big-Ass Mistake for America (O.B.A.M.A.).

Hey, NAACP! Repudiate THIS…

July 15, 2010

“Political Correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.” – Retired Marine Lt. Col. R. J. Widermann

It’s hard to give a whole lot of credibility to the NAACP these days. As a young boy, I eagerly supported their efforts in the 60s as most idealists did in the day. We WANTED equality for our black brothers and sisters. Many of us attended rallies with our African American friends to show solidarity.

But in 2010, the NAACP has become a pathetic, embarrassing shell of the organization it once was, resorting to the ridiculous in an attempt to perpetuate African Americans as victims of racism.  This, of course, has not been lost on First Lady Michelle Obama who, like her husband, is not above playing the race card if it advances their personal agenda.

Tuesday, after a rousing speech by FLOTUS at the organization’s 101st annual convention in Kansas City, Missouri where she implored members to “intensify” their actions,  the NAACP, in dramatic fashion, passed a resolution condemning what it referred to as “rampant racism in the Tea Party movement.” They called on all members of the Tea Party movement to repudiate all the racists that, to them, make up a large part of the purpose of the group.

Ben Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP, demanded of the tea party movement:

“Expel the bigots and racists in your ranks or take the responsibility for them and their actions. We will no longer allow you to hide like cowards.”

“How’s that again, Ben?

Yeah, Ben, we’ll get right on that. Just as soon as you take responsibility and – God forbid – a stand against the bigots and racists in your own back yard… like those who accuse the tea party movement as harboring rampant racism. Who is really the coward here, Mr. Jealous? How hard is it, really, to stand amongst your own and spew accusations of racism about people who simply see their President as a person attempting to take this country down the path of a form of socialism that has failed wherever it has been tried… and as a person who is striving, NOT to elevate the poor and disenfranchised, but to LOWER the entire country to their status? I would suggest this has NOTHING to do with President Obama’s race (especially in light of the fact that many of the tea party members are those who voted for Barack Obama) but everything to do with his arrogance and steady march towards a value system that is counter to those of us who value our freedom and existing democracy.

Mr. Jealous, it is possible for people of any color to disagree with the policies of the President of the United States without being racist. How many non-whites had issues with our previous President? Did that make them racist? How is it that a large number of African Americans are members of the tea party movement? Are they racist?

This is just the latest desperate plea for attention offered by the same civil rights organization that

  • refused to rebuke the gross anti-white racism of the Reverend Jeremiah “God DAMN America” Wright.
  • remains strangely silent while members of the New Black Panthers encourage the killing of  ” white crackers” and “cracker babies.” Cat got your tongue, Mr. Jealous? And you have the gall to call others cowards? And say… isn’t the NAACP the same group that…
  • accused Hallmark of perpetuating negative stereotypes towards African American women by referring to them as “Black Whores” in the audio chip of a space-themed graduation day greeting card (where the characters were clearly referring to “Black Holes” in the solar system):

Congratulations, Mr. Jealous. I never thought any organization could come across looking more hypocritical or pathetic than the New Black Panthers. But at least they are honest in their racism and hatred.

The reaction to the NAACP Resolution has been, predictably, fast and furious. Former Alaska Governor Sara Palin wrote on her facebook page:

“The charge that Tea Party Americans judge people by the color of their skin is false, appalling, and is a regressive and diversionary tactic to change the subject at hand.”

Michelle Malkin has a run-down on other idiotic acts of desperation by what she refers to as the “National Association for the Advancement of Coddled People” on her blog.

But, perhaps, the best response to this act of what I refer to as “Projectile Racism” (See Barack Obama campaign speech here) The St. Louis Tea Party quickly responded with a resolution of their own. And it says it all:

St. Louis Tea Party Coalition Resolution
July 12, 2010

Whereas, the National Coalition for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded to advance the position of minority groups, and

Whereas a hallmark of the NAACP has been to do the important work of identifying and exposing remaining vestiges of racism and discrimination, and

Whereas the NAACP vocally stands against the discriminatory and harmful practice of labeling people with a broad brush, and

Whereas the NAACP decided to launch their 101st National Convention with a resolution condemning the Tea Party movement and labeling millions of their fellow Americans who subscribe to the movement as “racists”, and

Whereas the “Tea Party movement” is a label applied to patriotic Americans who have expressed their political free speech in the grand tradition of all that is American, that being the spirited expression of viewpoints in a 100% peaceful manner, and

Whereas, it is a hallmark of America that we settle our disputes civilly and avoid the gutter tactic of attempting to silence opponents by inflammatory name-calling, and

Whereas the very term “racist” has diminished meaning due to its overuse by political partisans including members of the NAACP, and

Whereas, the NAACP had an opportunity to preserve some semblance of legitimacy by standing up for Ken Gladney, the victim of a vicious racist battery conducted by a black avowed communist, even labeling him an “Uncle Tom”, but chose instead to use the opportunity to mock the St. Louis Tea Party, and

Whereas, the NAACP has refused to denounce the New Black Panther’s call to murder white cops and their babies, and

Whereas, the NAACP does its entire membership a grave disservice by hypocritically engaging in the very conduct it purports to oppose,

Now therefore be it resolved that the St. Louis Tea Party condemns the NAACP for lowering itself to the dishonorable position of a partisan political attack dog organization, and,

Be it further resolved that the St. Louis Tea Party calls on similar organizations to join in unanimous condemnation of this despicable behavior, and

Be it further resolved that we demand that the NAACP withdrawal their bigoted, false and inflammatory resolution against the tea party for any further consideration, and

Be it further resolved that these organizations call on the Internal Revenue Service to evenly apply their standards and consider the tax-exempt status of the NAACP considering the degree to which they are engaging in habitual partisan political behavior.

Adopted unanimously, this day, July 12th, in the year of our Lord, 2010.

Can I get an Amen!

The White House Fly: New WH Phone System

June 23, 2010

For those of you considering calling the White House… be aware: They have a new phone system designed to streamline calls to their appropriate extension:

Gerry AshleyUpdate: I’ve received several e-mails asking if there really is a “White House Fly” who is giving us exclusive access to comments made inside 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Others have been less diplomatic, questioning my sources and demanding proof that the White House Fly actually exists. In an effort to provide “full disclosure” and respond to all queries regarding this, I offer the following evidence:

The White House Fly… Semi-Fair and Nearly Balanced.

Thank you… now get back to work!

The Fly on the White House Wall: Obama and Joe Sestak

May 25, 2010

In her recent article addressing the White House and its possible bribe offer to Rep. Joe Sestak, Michelle Malkin wrote:

“Oh, to be a fly on the wall in the offices of Joe Sestak and the White House spin shop right now…”

Fortunately, Grand Rants’ own “White House Fly” was on the scene. We’ve gotcha covered, Michelle:

The Abject Failure Of The Obama Presidency – Part 5

April 12, 2010

“If you want to test a man’s character, give him adversity. If you want to test his integrity, give him power.” Gerry Ashley

Tenet #5: You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence.

I know it might seem presumptuous to quote myself at the top of this piece, but that has been a long-standing tenet of my own and one I feel fits perfectly here. I coined that expression in 1978, after having spent some time in what was then the Soviet Union. I had been teaching computer technology classes to Russian scientists at The Institute for High Energy Physics  (outside of Moscow). Ironically, it was a quote from an interview I gave (upon my return) in praise of the Russian people I had met during my time spent there… and as an indictment of their political leaders.

I’m dumbfounded to find its level of applicability in America some 32 years later.

For those too young to remember, let me clarify that “Soviet Union” actually referred to a combination of countries known collectively as the “United Soviet Socialist Republic” (USSR). Please note the third word in that title. Although communist in nature, the countries operated under a socialist structure. The socialist structure stripped away any incentive for the individual to strive for excellence.

Case in point: I had dinner with an architect while there. He explained to me that he had made the exact same salary for 20 years, regardless of the quality of his work. Not long before our meeting, a young man who had just graduated from university and gone to work with my friend, sitting at the next desk. He had a starting salary which was the same as that of my friend with 20 years’ experience.

Imagine the feeling my friend had, knowing that this young man straight from University was starting at the same level he was at after 20 years of service. Now imagine how much initiative the young man might have, sitting next to my friend and knowing that, no matter how good a job he does, in 20 years, he would be making no more money than he’s already making.

That’s how it goes in a socialist state: The government defines the value of the position, no matter the level of experience… or the quality of the job performed.  By the way: The quality of their goods reflected the lack of incentive to strive for excellence. The only time the Soviet government strove for (and demanded) excellence was when the product was one which would be viewed by the West and would bring shame upon the Soviet system if it were substandard. Hence the amount of effort that went in to export products like vodka and caviar; hence the intense attention to (and support of) athletes who would be competing against other countries (such as the Olympic Games).

Get ready for that, America. That’s what Barack Obama’s vision is for us: The same level of quality of life the Soviets had 30 years go. And back then, the Soviet standard was about 40 years behind America’s. Do the math and it’s easy to see that the standard of living Obama wants to take America to is where we were 70 years ago.  Is that a goal we should have for our children? Our grandchildren? Ourselves

One wonders if Obama will place a similar level of importance on the quality of workmanship applied to our exports and international athletes. Perhaps the answer will be based on whether or not he feels he’s apologized enough for America’s past greatness.

One thing is certain: If what I refer to as Obamunism takes hold in America, he won’t have to worry about apologizing for America’s greatness any longer.

Sadder still, that may be his goal.
