The Deconstruction of Trayvon

July 22, 2013

Anyone who was paying attention to the actual facts of the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case already knows this, but as usual, Bill Whittle’s eloquence spells it all out clear as a bell.

My only question is this: did anyone ever bother to inquire whether there was any Robutussin found in the medicine chest of Martin’s father’s girlfriend?

Sometimes a Poptart Is Just a Poptart

March 4, 2013

Or, One-Size-Fits-All Rules Really Don’t

In the past week we’ve had some stellar (and dreadful) examples of “one size fits all” rules being broken, and the sheer idiocy and loss of life that can result.

Case in point #1: A small boy nibbles a Pop-Tart, trying to make it look like a mountain. Being a 2nd-grader, it ends up looking not so much like a mountain, but rather somewhat like a gun (photo here, you decide; it looks rather like Idaho to me). Teacher promptly suspends child for two days, because, according to Fox News:

“[A] student used food to make an inappropriate gesture.”

I’ve got yer inappropriate gesture right here, folks.

Case in point #2: A teen who should be hailed as a hero is, of course, suspended from school. The boy and two classmates tackled another student who was pointing a loaded gun at yet another student.

“I think he was really going to shoot him right then and there,” said the suspended student, not identified by WFTX because of safety concerns. “Not taking no pity.”

The student said the suspect, a football player, threatened to shoot a teammate because he had been arguing with his friend…

That’s when, the teen told the station, he and two others tackled the suspect and wrestled the gun away. The next day, all three were suspended.

Case in point #3: In this one, strict adherence to the rules led to the death of an 87-year-old woman. In Bakersfield, CA, an elderly woman collapsed at her retirement home. A staff nurse called 9-1-1 for assistance, and the dispatcher determined that the woman wasn’t breathing and required immediate CPR in order to survive until the ambulance arrives.

[The dispatcher] pleads for the nurse to perform CPR, and after several refusals she starts pleading for her to find a resident, or a gardener, or anyone not employed by the home to get on the phone, take her instructions and help the woman.

“Can we flag someone down in the street and get them to help this lady?” Halvorson says on the call. “Can we flag a stranger down? I bet a stranger would help her.”

Not only did the nurse refuse to give CPR, she also refused to ask anyone else, even outside the home, to assist. As a result, the elderly woman died.

Folks, I just don’t know where to begin here. We as a culture are rapidly losing the ability to think for ourselves, to make the tough choices, to stand up for what is right — see Case in Point#2 for what happens when you actually do the right thing.

Common sense and the ability to do the right thing are being educated out of our children, regulationed out of our professionals, and bred out of our natures.

Society now has so many guidelines and regulations now that inhibit independent thinking, that stifle creativity, that punish good deed doers. That these rules are applied across the board, without thinking, and apparently without either common sense or compassion bodes ill for the future of society.

The present isn’t looking all that hot right now, either.

Whoopi Goldberg Would Be Pleased

February 26, 2013

[Content warning: somewhat graphic description in the article quoted below]

After all, it’s not rape rape

As reported by GlobalPost:

A Swedish court on Thursday overturned a rape conviction for a man who performed a forced “infidelity check” on his girlfriend, prompting calls for rape laws to be changed.

Rachid Zoghlami was convicted of rape and sentenced to two years and eight months in jail in December, after he penetrated his girlfriend with his fingers to determine whether she had been unfaithful.

But a court of appeal in Stockholm ruled that the 28-year-old’s actions were to be viewed as coercion rather than rape since they weren’t driven by “sexual intent”, then reduced his sentence to 18 months behind bars.

Exit question: If I presume that Mr. Zoghlami is a Muslim, am I  a) racist  b) an Islamaphobe  c) Christianist  or d) all of the above?

Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be “Showgirls”

March 12, 2012

Sadly, it’s likely that bit of paraphrased advice will have absolutely no effect on the children involved in a show called “Dance Moms” on the Lifetime Network.

The Lifetime Television Network claims to be for women. Its mission statement:

Lifetime Networks is a diverse, multi-media company, committed to offering the highest quality entertainment and information programming content that celebrates, entertains and supports women. Through its award-winning public affairs initiatives, the Company also advocates a wide range of issues affecting women and their families.

Nowhere in their statement do they mention the well-being of little girls, so it should come as no surprise to anyone that this network would choose to produce an episode of a show called “Dance Moms” in which little girls are basically taught a bump-and-grind routine, dressed in nude costumes bedizzened with sequins and feathers, and required to peform said routine in front of the cameras. Yeah, that celebrates, entertains, and supports women, all right.

Tuesday night’s episode, titled “Topless Showgirls,” featured girls as young as eight performing a sexually charged, provocative showgirl-like routine in a local dance competition, donning barely-there sparkly flesh-colored bras and panties to give the illusion of nudity.

“All the girls and I feel kind of nervous because we feel kind of naked,” one of the dancers said prior to taking the stage…

The raunchy routine involved girls thrusting their chests forward and backward, shimmying across the stage and even pretending to cover themselves up with big feathers as they bounced from the stage. [emphasis mine]

The woman in charge of all of this, Abby Lee Miller, teaches the little girls this routine:

“I’m hot, I’m mean, you can’t have me, you can’t afford me,” Miller recited to the girls as she taught the moves, before telling the cameras: “The moms are ridiculous because all they’re worried about is their kids and their bodies and blah blah. Once you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all. This is show business kid.”

You can’t have me, you can’t afford me.” Honestly, I can’t think of anything more horrifying than having a daughter of mine under the thumb of a woman like this for any reason whatsoever.

Read the whole report at Fox News and prepare for your blood to boil.

It’s funny. Rush Limbaugh lost a few advertisers because he implied that a 30-year-old woman who demanded that others pay for her sex life was somewhat less than virtuous; liberal men and women were predictably “outraged” by his calling a slut a slut. Perhaps it’s time to reset the concept of outrage back to where it belongs–by reacting strongly when people actually do things like this to exploit children.

You can email Lifetime Network… well, no, apparently you can’t contact them via email. But their phone number is 212- 424-7293.

If any of these girls are able to escape the influence of their “dance” instructor and their Rose Hovic-type mothers, I fear many of them are still destined to grow up to be latter-day Sandra Flukes.

Do You Have The Courage To Watch This Movie?

October 27, 2011

I’m going to guess that 90% will claim you do, but then do nothing. Sorry, folks, but that’s who we are, and I hope by challenging you, you will prove me wrong. Let me explain:

Take a look around you. Are you happy with where our society has gone?  Does it bother you to see the amount of violence our society seems to accept as “normal?” Are you uncomfortable seeing children grow up with virtually no concept of right and wrong?  Does it trouble you that young adults seem to make up their own rules as they go along, eschewing the accepted values of society?

It should worry you.

But what should worry you even more is the realization that we are now reaping what we have sown for several generations spawned from those wonderful days of “the sexual revolution” of the 60s. Since then, we have (as a society) sub-contracted the job of raising our children (and, therefore, instilling values) to day care centers, school systems, and the government who now feels it’s their right to establish goals for sex education for our young.

Be mad. But be mad at ourselves.  As a society, all too often we have abandoned our posts as parents. We’ve passed on the one opportunity we get as parents to teach our children. And we are guilty of letting our children be subjugated by a society that has few or no values to offer. The problem we have created is threatening our society, dragging it into a cesspool of neglect and, in many cases, indifference. We have reached a point where young, single mothers with few morals see their babies as a hindrance to their dating and partying.  And all too often, it’s the children who pay a tragic price. But the problem really stems from those who father the children, then simply move on. Therein lies the focus of a movie that may be the most important film you may never have heard of.

Guns and More Guns!

October 11, 2011

No, we’re not talking about Fast and Furious today. We’re talking about what a beautiful weekend it was, and how much fun it was to go to the bucolic and gorgeous Cape Cod Fish and Game club and do some shooting!

Some of you may remember reading my post about the process of getting a license in Massachusetts from last year. Since then, about the only thing I’ve done, gun-wise, was purchase a S&W kit gun, which is a nice little revolver; but after taking it to the range and trying it out, I found I didn’t really enjoy shooting it. What to do, what to do?

Off to the gun store again, to trade it in for a Walther P22 and a Henry Survival Rifle.

First off, CCF&G is a lovely club, embodying so much that is beautiful about life on Cape Cod. Set in a rural area, there’s a trap area, rifle range, pistol range, and soon-to-be-opened plinking range. Plus an outdoor archery trail, and indoor archery range, and an indoor pistol range still in process. Plus, there’s a pond to swim, kayak, or fish in. Best of all possible worlds, eh? Here’s a quick look at the area:

So spouse and I went over to the pistol range and tried out both the Walther and the Henry. After several hundred rounds (and boy, was that fun!) I must say that I am quite impressed with both. The P22 is a sweet little handful, and because I was using Mini-Mags, I saw nary a mis-fire.

The Henry… what can I say about a rifle that can be completely disassembled, fits into its own 16.5″ buttstock, and only weighs 2.5 pounds?

I can say that it’s a fantastic rifle! And surprisingly accurate, as well. This is the type of firearm you can toss into your backpack when going camping or hiking. Or put it into the “hurricane-tornado-flood” survival box in case of the need for evacuation. Or just take to the range and shoot!

So after my first real day at the range, I can say with certainty that I am hooked! Can’t wait for next weekend…

Tony Bennett: What A Difference A Day Made

September 21, 2011

You probably heard or read about Tony Bennett’s incredibly wrong-headed, not to mention nonsensical statement to Howard Stern the other day, about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks:

“Who are the terrorists? Are we the terrorists, or are they the terrorists? Two wrongs don’t make a right. They flew the plane in, but we caused it. We were bombing them, and they told us to stop.”

In an attempt to control the damage, yesterday, Mr. Bennett “clarified” his remarks:

“I am sorry if my statements suggested anything other than an expression of my love for my country, my hope for humanity and my desire for peace throughout the world.”

In other words, sorry you didn’t like what I said. Buy my new album anyway.

Sorry, Mr. Bennett, but if I thought about you at all, you’d realize that I’ve got a cold, cold heart on this matter. Time after time we have to deal with all the liberal spinning. And the way you look tonight after your second statement makes me think you’re going to be a stranger in paradise. For once in your life, can’t you find it in your heart to realize that you’re having the good life, and the best is yet to come–because you live in America.

And if I ruled the world, you’d be walking down the boulevard of broken dreams for your comments.

London Burning: Something Wicked This Way Comes?

August 9, 2011

Coming soon to a neighborhood near you? Source: AP/PA

London is burning. Following the shooting death (by police) of a young black man suspected of being a gang member,  thugs and looters have taken to the streets en masse, baring the ugly side of humanity by employing random violence throughout the Tottenham area in North London. On some streets, not a single business has been left un-looted.

In some ways, it’s not unlike similar riots we have seen here in America: A police action against a minority that is seen as questionable (or, in the eyes of the minority community, racially motivated). And before all the facts are uncovered, a few members in that minority community rush to judgement and take matters into their own hands. The result? Rioting, looting, and unfortunately, casualties.

But there is a difference in London’s rioting; and I fear it may be a harbinger of something far darker.  And I fear even more that it may well spread world-wide, including here in America. Call it the perfect storm of societal breakdown. And it crosses all racial, ethnic, and religious lines.

Feeding my fear is that, even as I write this, the rioting is now spreading, not just to other parts of London, but also to other cities in England as reported in the Christian Science Monitor… including  Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham, Liverpool, Oxford and Reading… all cities that have no direct connection with the shooting incident.

That raises the question: At this point, is the rioting just about the shooting? Or has society simply reached a flash point where thugs (regardless of background) are becoming so brazen they are taking the attitude of  ‘Let’s just do it! There ain’t enough cops to stop us all”?

The next few days will most likely disclose an answer. For if the British authorities are not able to stop the violence before it spreads throughout the rest of London and to even more cities, it will be seen as an opportunity by the large underclass of all nations who may decide to throw caution under the  bus and live by the old adages, “Might makes right!” and “There’s strength in numbers.”

Worse, if our law enforcement isn’t prepared to deal with this quickly and effectively (as London’s law enforcement has so far failed to do), we could see the complete breakdown of society we have long feared might eventually come.

Pay close attention to England, folks. As Fox News reported this morning,  British Prime Minister David Cameron has taken pro-active steps by recalling Parliament from its summer recess as well as boosting the number of police on the streets tonight to almost triple the amount of previous nights. This follows three days of rioting in London which has now spread to other cities, creatinging a full-blown political crisis.

Pray the authorities are able to stop the rioting and thug brutality. Otherwise, expect something wicked to reach our shores.

Slouching Toward Sharia

July 27, 2011

No, not here in America. Not yet.

But lawyer and radical preacher Anjem Choudary is determined to bring Muslim extremism to young people in London, as reported in June at Creeping Sharia. And this month he’s going even further in his efforts to “radicalise the youth” and imprison Londoners in an iron cage of Islamic rule.

Mr. Choudary is attempting to set up sharia law zones in London in which smoking, drinking, music, and concerts are banned.

The Daily Mail reports:

‘You are entering a Sharia-controlled zone – Islamic rules enforced.

“The bright yellow messages daubed on bus stops and street lamps have already been seen across certain boroughs in London and order that in the ‘zone’ there should be ‘no gambling’, ‘no music or concerts’, ‘no porn or prostitution’, ‘no drugs or smoking’ and ‘no alcohol’.

“Hate preacher Anjem Choudary has claimed responsibility for the scheme, saying he plans to flood specific Muslim and non-Muslim communities around the UK and ‘put the seeds down for an Islamic Emirate in the long term’…

“The campaign comes just months after stickers proclaiming a ‘gay-free zone’ and appearing to reference the religious Islamic text of the Koran appeared in Tower Hamlets.

“Women in parts of East London including Tower Hamlets have been threatened with violence and even death by Islamic extremists if they did not wear headscarves.”

Gay-free zones? Women threatened with death for not wearing headscarves? The entire western world is slowly being diminished because of its wholehearted worship of the golden calf of multiculturalism.

How long will it be before this type of behavior reaches our shores?

Or is it already here?

Sign of the Times

A really pathetic example of what passes for acceptable behavior today.

Disgusting conduct from an adult who should know better.

Hey lady,  next time, pick on someone your own size. I hope it’s me.
