Why Obama’s Dismissal Of Arlington Is Unforgivable

I hear that Barack Obama has better things to do than leading the tradition of honoring the soldiers buried in Arlington National Cemetery (as is normally the case for a President each year). It’s especially significant during the years we are at war.

And I hear that Barack Obama will stop by a cemetery while he’s on vacation in Chicago. Make no mistake, he will undoubtedly have the Press Corps with him.  Hell, he might even have “Teleprompter One” with him so he can say some well-rehearsed “impromptu” comments which, we all know, won’t really be heartfelt except for how it might help his image.

Maybe this is because Obama has no investment in our freedom.

I detest the message Obama’s actions send our youth. “It’s just another tradition, kids… nothing important.” Especially to someone who apparently finds it necessary to travel the world (at our expense) living lavishly while he trashes the very country he purports to lead. The very country so many hundreds of thousands of young men and women have died in order that the country may endure. It’s more than “just a tradition…” Some traditions are important as reminders to all, and this is one of them.

A real leader doesn’t ignore the thousands of neatly rowed crosses marking the final resting places of young men and women who never got to share the promise of America… but whose sacrifices made sure WE did.

And Obama apparently doesn’t see the importance in that. I do. I have friends lying there. I resent – and I want to emphasize that… I RESENT a President who  chooses not to be there on the one day we set aside to stop and remember the years of life each one sacrificed. It just doesn’t seem right. And do you know why it doesn’t seem right? Because it isn’t. It speaks volumes about his lack of respect for this country… and that lack of respect will continue until he re-makes America into his vision.

The arrogance

But Obama will undoubtedly make a speech wherever he is. No doubt he’ll be impressed with himself. But fewer and fewer of Americans are. And this snub of our heroes will only make it worse. At least it should.

There’s a scene at the end of “Saving Private Ryan” where a now-retired James Ryan travels back to France to visit the grave of Captain John Miller who died making sure Ryan was safely returned to his family… a family that had already  lost  3 sons in World War II. It is a most moving moment that sums up what it’s like for those of us who did survive and got to live our lives because of the sacrifice of others. It also shows the reverence we should all have… especially the President of the United States.

To all of you who have served in the military and, like me, was lucky enough to complete your tour of duty, you know what this week-end means to me, because it means the same to you. Thank you, brothers and sisters.

To those of you who have relatives serving today, thank you and your loved ones. May they come home soon and safe.

And to all of those who never made it home, thank you for your service and may God hold you always.

One final thought: We have been given the gift of freedom thanks to the sacrifice of so many. But it is still up to each one of us to EARN it by being respectful of each other. By being respectful of those who fought, and sometimes died on our behalf.  Live GOOD lives, lives with meaning. Because you/we are not just living our lives, but carrying their share of the American dream on our shoulders. Earn what we’ve been given, so when we pass it on to the next generation, they too will understand and appreciate how special freedom is. And next time, maybe we can elect a President who understands what an HONOR it is to attend the ceremonies in Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day and to be the one to lead the display of respect and appreciation.

Have a safe and meaningful Memorial Day Week-end. Please find a way to show respect and appreciation for our men and women in the service of our country.

  2. My veteran son said, he is glad Obama is not going. That is holy ground and we must keep it that way.
I can’t help but wonder what my WW2 husband would say? He despised Clinton and I know he would have some fine words to say about Obama.

Alma, you raise a very valid point. Obama deserves to walk that hallowed ground about as much as Mahamoud Ahmadinejad deserves an invitation to a synogue.

Like I wrote in the rant above: Obama has made no investment in our freedom. And, frankly, in my opinion, he couldn’t carry the jockstraps of our brave soldiers. And lest anyone think I’m racist, I said the very thing about that draft-dodger Bill Clinton.

This quote from you really hit me in the right place,
“Because you/we are not just living our lives, but carrying their share of the American dream on our shoulders. Earn what we’ve been given, so when we pass it on to the next generation, they too will understand and appreciate how special freedom is.”
Oh, how I hope we CAN earn and pass on the understanding and appreciation of our freedom.
It truly is priceless. Good post – thanks, Gerry.

    • Gerry Ashley says:

Thank you, Josie. I truly believe that if we could all somehow keep that perspective, freedom and liberty would never be in “danger from within” in this country as it is under Barack Hussein Oh-blame-us.

When I wrote that “Obama has no investment in our freedom,” that’s what I was referring to. He’s never actually served in the military and known first-hand the responsibility and inherent dangers that go with it protecting freedom & democracy. Neither did Bill Clinton.

Beware when all a person has going for them is ideology.

One final thought: Why is it that the most important positions in this country (Congressman, President, Vice-President etc.) have no actual “job requirements” like every other major position from bank clerk to CEO?

Maybe if we actually had some stated job requirements and skill sets necessary to apply for the job of politician we’d wind up with a higher quality applicant? Just a thought.

Fake outrage from the anti-American *sexually explicit term, referring to those who attend Tea Party rallies, removed*:

Ronny Raygun didn’t go to Arlington twice during his failed presidency.

H dubyah never went to Arlington during his failed presidency.

dubyah missed Arlington once during his failed presidency.

    • Stoutcat says:

Dr. Matt, really one comment is enough, you don’t have to send the same comment four times. Also, we don’t allow obscenity in our comments, which is why I made a slight modification to yours. Your meaning is still clear.

I’ll leave it to Gerry to address the fact that this really has nothing to do with former presidents, but more to do with President Obama himself.

    • Gerry Ashley says:

Dr. Matt (why do I get the feeling that you’re a doctor in your own mind only? Oh yes, it’s because most people with the amount of education one needs to be a doctor know how to communicate without having to repeat themselves numerous times. They also know how to get a point across without having to revert to the use of obscenities).

As Stoutcat mentioned, I’m addressing the issue of “The Great Pretender” Barack Hussein Oh-Blame-Us.

But since you bring it up, let’s put all the cards on the table.

      President Ronald Reagan
Yes, he missed two of his 8 years. One of those years, it was because he was speaking at West Point. Another year, he was at his Ranch in California. I believe that was the year he was recovering from an assassination attempt.

      President George Herbert Walker Bush
I have read that the one-term President did not go to Arlington National Cemetary. I’m critical of ANY President who chooses to bypass the ceremony. If Grand Rants was around during his term, I’d have spoken out in criticism of Bush 41 as well.

      President Bill Clinton
Let’s give credit where due. Although he was a draft dodger, by the time he became President, he saw fit to attend every year. Kudos to the Philanderer-in-Chief. Still, it appears that Monica Lewinsky did more to “serve her country” than did Bubba.

      President George W. Bush

Bush 43 attended the ceremonies for 6 of his 8 years. Not a perfect record, but better than his dad’s record.

But what makes all of these Presidents different than Obama is that these Presidents didn’t travel around the world apologizing to our adversaries, and they didn’t turn their backs on our allies, most notably Israel the way Obama has done with such verve. Reagan caused the Soviet’s government to implode, setting up the downfall of Communism. Bush 41 is a decorated war hero from WWII.

None of the afore mentioned former Presidents had people around the world questioning their loyalty to the US the way they do with Obama… and not even Bill Clinton trash-talked this country the way Obama has.

THEREIN lies the difference. They all moved the country forward, while Obama has nothing but a failed ideology going for him and he won’t hesitate to do an end run around the Constitution… the same Constitution he (and all the other Presidents) took an oath to protect.

I stand by my criticism of the current POTUS.

  6. Obama is honestly in some trouble now. He really needs to put more effort in to get this under control. It’s such a massive disaster.
