The Contreras Letter: Read Now, Act Now

In case you don’t know the story, Glenn Beck received and read a letter from a concerned citizen the other day. It was an open letter to our nation’s leadership. The letter says pretty much what many of us are feeling these days.  Below are some selected quotes, but I urge you to read the whole thing here:

I’m a home grown American citizen, 53, registered Democrat all my life. Before the last presidential election I registered as a Republican because I no longer felt the Democratic Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. Now I no longer feel the Republican Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. The fact is I no longer feel any political party or representative in Washington represents my views or works to pursue the issues important to me. There must be someone. Please tell me who you are. Please stand up and tell me that you are there and that you’re willing to fight for our Constitution as it was written. Please stand up now.

One, illegal immigration. I want you to stop coddling illegal immigrants and secure our borders. Close the underground tunnels. Stop the violence and the trafficking in drugs and people. No amnesty, not again. Been there, done that, no resolution.

Two, the TARP bill, I want it repealed and I want no further funding supplied to it. We told you no, but you did it anyway….

Three: Czars, I want the circumvention of our checks and balances stopped immediately. Fire the czars. No more czars…

Four, cap and trade. The debate on global warming is not over. There is more to say.

Five, universal healthcare… Don’t you dare try to pass this in the middle of the night and then go on break. Slow down!

Six, growing government control. I want states rights and sovereignty fully restored. I want less government in my life, not more…

Seven, ACORN. I do not want ACORN and its affiliates in charge of our 2010 census. I want them investigated…

Eight, redistribution of wealth. No, no, no. I work for my money. It is mine…

Nine, charitable contributions. Although I never got a job from a poor person, I have helped many in need…

Ten, corporate bailouts. Knock it off. Sink or swim like the rest of us…

Eleven, transparency and accountability. How about it? No, really, how about it?…

Twelve, unprecedented quick spending. Stop it now.

Ms. Contreras elaborates beautifully on each of the points above, and adds some pretty sharp insights into what’s going on and why it needs to change. She finishes with the following:

Democrat, Republican, independent, libertarian. Understand this. We don’t care. Political parties are meaningless to us. Patriotic Americans are willing to do right by us and our Constitution and that is all that matters to us now. We are going to fire all of you who abuse power and seek more. It is not your power. It is ours and we want it back… We are coming. Are we coming for you? Who do you represent? What do you represent? Listen. Because we are coming. We the people are coming.

This is going to go viral, if it hasn’t already. And it should. Every concerned citizen should be sending this letter to every corrupt, venal, power-hungry politician in Washington, in every state capital, and in every city, big or small.

This is what the Tea Parties are about. This is our “I’m as mad as hell” manifesto. This is the time to act.

Let’s roll.

  1. Trialdog says:

I propose legislation, specifically to be applied retroactively, which requires any current or former Congressman, Senator, administration official, and their staffers, to disgorge any profits or gains received as a result of any legislation, rule, or regulation they voted for, lobbied for, testified in favor of, or drafted.
Failure to disgorge said profits or gains shall be a felony, punishable by a minimum fine of 100% of the profits or gains not disgorged and a minimum prison sentence of 10 years.
Whistleblowers will be allowed to keep 1/2 of all profits or gains wrongfully witheld and subsequently recovered through the whistleblower’s help.
This will fund nationalized health care and balance our budget.

  2. Gail S says:

Okay, but she, as everyone else, has not yet provided an action plan.

    Here is the plan:

Part 1 / Triage / Emergency Conservative Action Plan

Demands: Repeal all 3 spending packages, Stimulus, Omnbibus and Budget.

Phase 1: Monthly 48 hour complete spending freezes. No spending of any king from July 5th through July 6th, and on the 2nd Sunday and following Monday of every month thereafter. Continue expanding this freeze until there are enough participants to make the government and media notice and start to sweat.

Phase 2: Long term discretionary spending freeze. During phase 1, stock up on discretionary items, and when the halt is called to the monthly 48 hour freezes, initiate a long term siege on the economy. No discretionary spending until all of the intolerable acts are repealed. No Starbucks, no movies, no new clothes or junk food…nothing that is not necessary to provide for your family and go to work.

Part 2: Restore the Representative Republic.

Identify the causes of the gross expansion of the federal government and restore our representative republic.

    Some of the causes are:

    1. Capping House membership at 435 back in 1911. The Constitution called for on Representative for every 30,000 citizens. That would be over 10,000 with today’s population.

    2. 16th Amendment to the Constitution allowing the federal government to tax income. I think we can repeal this one.

    3. 17th Amendment to the Constitution allowing Senators to be elected by the public instead of appointed by the State Legislature, thereby diluting State Sovereignty, sidelining the State government in favor of the Federal government.

These all need to be debated and discussed. We need new ideas and recommendations and we can all pitch in with our ideas and debate them while we are not spending money and not going to movies.

    Best regards to all,
    Gail S

  3. John Hanson says:

The citizens are angry about many things. To bring heat to bear on Congress we must give them one unifying issue to focus on. Repeal of the 16th is our best shot because it is the same rallying issue of the first American Revolution -FREEDOM. All true Americans treasure freedom.

The evil inherent in giving Congress the power to tax income without restraint other than public opinion has allowed them to gradually develop a tax code through which they are an entity that rules us rather than represents us. Our forefathers predicted that the assumption of this power by Congress would lead to their corruption and the end of our Republic. It is a power a government must have to become a Socialist State with all property belonging to the State.

A special site has been set up where Americans can sign a “2nd Declaration of Independence” like the one our forefather patriots did. All of the web groups out there are invited to co-promote and co-sponsor this July 12th movement regardless of the solutions they sponsor. Just as the 16th Amendment was the first great enabling step in a 180 degree turn away from the government given us by our founding fathers, repealing it must be our first enabling step toward returning to that government. July 12th 2009 has been declared a National Day of Mourning as it is the Centennial of the birth of personal income taxation! Gathering millions to participate in this movement will greatly increase the awareness of our sleeping fellow Americans to our common PROBLEM. Only then will attention be paid to the solutions offered by various groups. Americans Unite! Sign the Declaration at .
