Quel Surprise! Obama Snubs Sarkozy

Nice piece of diplomacy, there, Mr. President!

From the TimesOnline:

The Obamas turn up in Paris this evening, but have declined a dinner invitation from the couple next door: the Sarkozys.

President Obama’s reluctance to spend more than minimum time with the French leader on his visit for the D-Day anniversary has come as an embarrassment to the Elysée Palace.

America’s First Family will not be dining with President Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni, even though they are staying at the residence of the US Ambassador, yards from the Elysée apartments where the Sarkozys spend their weekends.

If you are invited to a ceremonial occasion by the head of a foreign state, doesn’t common courtesy (and common sense!) suggest that you actually, you  know, socialize with your host, at least somewhat?

The President ought to fire his entire Department of Protocol and hire some folks who know what they’re doing. On the other hand, if His Obama-ness can’t grasp the concept that DVDs and iPods are in poor taste, perhaps the Sarkozys are better off being snubbed.

To paraphrase the old saying, there are blunders of  commission and blunders of omission; maybe it’s better that the Obamas stumbled upon the latter.

I think the problem is that King Abdullah has created a monster. You wanna get Obama’s attention? You now apparently need to bring some bling to the table.

Ever since Abdullah gave Bambi his “Mr. T Starter Set,” he’s upped the ante for all other leaders.

As far as rejecting the invite from Sarkozy, it’s really easy to explain: During the presidential campaign, Obama promised Michelle a “date night” in Paris, and he’s simply trying to save the taxpayer’s money by having that date night tonight instead of having to fly over from Washington DC during the week. At least that’s the rumor I’m starting…
