What Happens in Greece Stays in Greece?

May 7, 2010

Or: It Can’t Happen Here… Can It?

The rioting that is happening in Greece is horrifying to observe yet hard to miss these days. How much more frightening must it be to see it happening first-hand. It’s sad to think that the country that gave birth to so many of the precepts on which Western civilization is based has sunk so low. It’s also too easy to be complacent and think that it couldn’t happen elsewhere… like right here.

As Michelle Malkin pointed out:

Think it couldn’t happen here? We’re getting closer. Reminder: SEIU Purple Shirts threw a city-wide tantrum in San Francisco last fall over budget cuts and layoffs. The teachers’ union in New Jersey wishes austerity crusader GOP Gov. Chris Christie dead. The anarchist riots in Santa Cruz caused massive property damage to more than a dozen businesses and a similar rampage in Asheville, NC involved more than 20 black-clad thugs — for whom a Denver anarchist group is now raising legal funds. Reminder: SEIU and little ACORN knock-offs launch banking shakedown campaign.

When Ponzi schemes crumble, European welfare state dependents take to the streets and demand that the same old schemes be propped up again…

The latest jobless rate, announced today, is 9.9%. In his statement this morning addressing the latest figures, Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) said:

“I look at the horrible images coming out of Greece and I am struck by the reality of what can happen when a country goes on a shopping spree without paying its bills. Thank goodness America is not at that point. We have time to right the ship and get serious about tackling our own debt crisis. But we have to start now. Until we do, sustainable- job growth may not be possible.” [emphasis mine]

Our government is now more than ever before on a shopping spree without being able to pay its bills.

With unemployment numbers rising again, with bankrupt entitlement programs indebting ourselves, our childern and their children to the tune of a hundred trillion dollars or so, with nearly half of the country paying no federal income tax, we have to act now.

We have to repeal Obama’s health care bill. We have to elect leaders with strong conservative values, leaders who are willing to stand up and state the true but unpopular facts: We must stop spending, cut entitlements, prevent government from inching its way into Americans’ everyday lives.

We must make the elections this November count in a way they’ve  never had to cont before. Otherwise, prepare yourselves for more of the same old same old.

Plus, very possibly, rioting in the streets… as the money finally runs out.

Liberal Humor: Fiction Only, Please!

May 6, 2010

Fictional president jokes about daughter and boys, with reference to 82nd Airborne — hilarity ensues!

Actual president jokes about daughters and boys, with reference to predator drones — think of the children!!!

President Obama told a joke. He’s a father, he has daughters, he’s allowed to joke about the situation. Fathers do it all the time. Sadly, 70% of the readers of the Washington Post’s article on this subject found the joke offensive, which suggests to me that liberals only have a sense of humor when it comes to fantasy, but not when it comes to real life.

To which I say, lighten up, Francis!

Boston: Proud… and Stupid

May 5, 2010

You sometimes have to wonder about the city of Boston. Here we are in the midst of Marine Week 2010, with our servicemen and women everywhere–in fact the Marine Band has been all over the city, and I’ve been fortunate enough to see them three times in as many days!

Sights and sounds that simply swell my being with pride, and choke me with unshed tears.

And in the midst of all that, the City of Boston pulls something like this:

The Boston City Council today passed a resolution ordering the city to yank any investments in Arizona companies in protest of that state’s tough new immigration law.

The measure was met with no opposition from any member of the council and passed on a voice vote…

The measure is in protest of a new law in Arizona aimed at cracking down on illegal immigrants which allows authorities to ask to see documentation from people with “reasonable suspicion.”

Don’t you love the use of the “scare quotes” in that last paragraph? They’re enough to make anyone suspicious of the phrase “reasonable suspicion”.

Fortunately, the readers and commenters at the Boston Herald seem to have more sense than the city councilors, as they make clear how bone-headed this resolution is.

Almost gives me some hope that Boston still is the cradle of liberty.

Semper fi!

Bias in the Media? What Next!

May 5, 2010

Our favorite writer, Bill Whittle, takes on media bias. What’s not to love?

“Now, most people think that this left-leaning press bias is a relatively recent phenomenon, but it’s not. And the consequences are not just skewed elections, as if that’s not serious enough, that’s just political ruin. But the consequence of this left-leaning press bias has cost a lot of people their lives–a lot of people…”

Why Do We Waste Time on Ahmadinejad…and the U.N. for That Matter?

May 4, 2010

All right, I’ll say right from the beginning that one of my core principles in life is not to deal with:

  • The psychotically delusional
  • Boldfaced liars
  • Vicious thugs

There… That’s just me… And for that matter, I dare say that it’s probably you too.

Enter Iran’s president Ahmadinejad in of all places New York City, Monday, May 3rd 2010… And there we were in the person of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Natch we were out there still “talking”. (I guess we still have our “open hand” thrust out for a “laurel, and hearty” handshake.) Ummm… Why are we doing this? When a “leader” like Ahmadinejad says that Iran doesn’t have any homosexuals, he’s either psychotically delusional or a boldfaced liar. The fact that Ahmadinejad is a wildly vicious thug goes without question. So why, oh why are we “talking”?

By the way… Did anyone notice the following:

“Ahmadinejad also had derogatory words for the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which he said had been “unsuccessful in discharging its responsibilities” because of the influence of the US over its management.

He called for the US to be removed from the agency’s board of governors and subjected to a formal UN rebuke for the use of nuclear threats. He insisted there was not a “single credible proof” that Iran was developing weapons. He said that any attack on “peaceful nuclear facilities” should be met with “a swift reaction from the United Nations and termination of all cooperation of NPT member states with the threatening aggressor state”.

As the Iranian leader spoke, delegations from the US, Britain and other EU states walked out of the conference hall, but his speech was greeted by applause from many of the remaining delegates.”

Why are we wasting time with Ahmadinejad? And why are we wasting both time and money with the U.N.?

It’s got me beat… Like I said, I make it a point to never try to deal with the psychotically delusional, boldfaced liars, and/or vicious thugs… But that’s just me…

Obama’s Dilemma: Oil Spill in Gulf of Mexico Etc.

May 1, 2010

Talk about timing: Back in the end of March 2010, President Obama said that we should open up more drilling off the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the north coast of Alaska… And then there were no less than three catastrophes:

Juxtapose the above with the recent announcement that for the first time, the United States is giving the “green light” to a controversial offshore wind farm, and President Obama is caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. To make matters worse, the very liberal POTUS has had the gumption to suggest that we move forward with nuclear power – a move that further flies in the face of  “Left Wing Agenda”.

Given all this, Barack Obama faces one terrible fact – our foreign sources of oil are terribly unstable and/or just downright hate us. Here are three of the five countries from which we import oil in order of amount:

  1. Mexico (second only to Canada)
  2. Venezuela (third overall)
  3. Saudi Arabia (fifth overall)

Ouch. But hold on. There’s even more happy happy: Take a look at just the short-term future projections for energy cost… Double ouch.

Quite simply, President Barack Obama is cornered. Just a month ago, he proposed that we consider more drilling and then came the disaster in the Gulf and the mines. He’s been excoriated by the Kennedy liberals for having the audacity to move forward with the Nantucket Sound wind farm. And to add salt to the wounds, conventional energy probably ain’t gonna get cheap in the near future.

When all is said and done, if there is one lonely advantage to having one’s soul wrestled naked to the unforgiving mirror of binding fact, it is this – we get to see the content of intention, character, and wisdom. And that is President Obama’s dilemma…
