Applause for the First Lady

We here at Grand Rants are frequently critical of the President’s policies, and for good reason. We have also had occasion to pick on the First Lady as well. But when either one of them does things right, we like to point out those instances as well.

Hubba hubba!Last night, Michelle Obama appeared every inch a First Lady the entire country could applaud. No dowdy red-and-black disaster dress, no unflattering dear-Lord-what-the-heck-is-that-outfit? moment.

She was drop-dead gorgous. Elegant. Stately. And just beautiful. Not only that, she actually appeared to be having a good time. She also looked as though she felt at ease with herself. That geeky fellow beside her looks like a sophomore nerd in his first tux who can’t believe the homecoming queen is his date.

For all I know the state dinner itself may have been a howling disaster, or a smashing success. The Indian Prime Minister and his wife may have stormed off in a huff after the first course, or they all might have stayed up dancing until dawn. Doesn’t matter for this moment. Doesn’t matter at all.

For the first time in my life, I was proud of our First Lady.

I hate to spoil a tender moment, but I think I just saw her, moments ago, returning the dress at Macy’s…

Just kidding, of course. Yes, she looked dazzling. But as Rush pointed out yesterday, why schedule a state dinner two days away from Baracksgiving? That tends to fly in the face of traditional WH Protocol… oh wait, What was I thinking? Mmmm-mmm-mmm.

  2. Robbins Mitchell says:

Well considering that Laura Bush had only 1 assistant in the First Lady’s office…an appointments secretary….and Blackie O has 20 or so to help her take care of her business,it’s hardly surprising that the ‘blind pig rule’ should come into play occasionally…..she is ghetto fabulous!

    • Stoutcat says:

Robbins Mitchell, referring to the First Lady as “Blackie O” is entirely inappropriate. Please refrain from posting deliberate slurs based on race. If you do it again, your comments will be deleted.

    • Wow says:

oh. my. god. ‘blackie o’? followed by ghetto fabulous ((what is ghetto about the beautiful champagne colors she is wearing??!))

and then you try to pass it off as something it is not? later after Stoutcat calls you on it, instead of apologizing.

you’re disgusting, Robbins Mitchell. at least stoutcat keeps it to the clothes, and could care less about anything else in this blog entry. you, Robbins Mitchell, are foul.

happy thanksgiving to everyone else. thank you, Stoutcat, for posting the beautiful photo. It’s made my morning to see her dressed elegantly, phenomenally, instead of in those J. Crew soccer mom sweaters.

  3. MIttens says:

OH FOR CHRIST’S SAKE! You weren’t proud of her at all. She’s the wrong color for you and your ilk…

    • Stoutcat says:

Mittens, I’m not sure where you got that impression. Perhaps you’d like to read though our blog and point out any instances of racism that we have uttered. You won’t find any. In fact, you’ll find that we decry racism: see, for example, this post, in which we point out the racism in several vile images of prominent political figures.

And indeed, I was proud of Mrs. O. She looked absolutely lovely.

    • Gerry Ashley says:

Mittens, the irony here is that it is you who displays the classic characteristics of a racist when you write a comment like that. I’m sure you don’t feel you are, but take a moment and you’ll see what I mean and why it appears that way.

. You obviously have not read many of our posts or you would know we decry racism in ALL its forms, including reverse racism.

. Anyone… and let me repeat that for emphasis: ANYONE, black, white, yellow, pink or any other shade who uses expressions like “you people” or “you and your ilk” instantly loses all credibility with the kind of intelligent readers we have, because all you are doing is displaying the ignorance of one who puts ALL of a group of people under the same banner.

To suggest “All Doctors” do this or “All computer programmers” do that is no more accurate than to say “All you and your ilk” (fill in the rest of your attack).

That dog won’t hunt here at Grand Rants. And it won’t hunt in the real world any longer. Not with a shred of credibility anyway.

Heck, I was born and raised in the greater Boston area and even I will admit that there are some NY Yankee fans that don’t suck. I even had a drink with one after a Red Sox game once.

      Once.

See? It’s all good. Please check your anger at the door when coming here. We can express our positions much better without it.

      Enjoy your Thanksgiving.

    • Wow says:

Mittens, I know what you’re saying. Stoutcat gets a pass from me, though. Michelle has been wearing some wack stuff recently.

Gerry Ashley is trying to have it both ways, which makes him worse than Robbins Mitchell.

Hugs to you for this Thanksgiving.

  4. Robbins Mitchell says:

Well, maybe if she and Barokeydoke hadn’t spent 20 years attending the Trinity United Church of Hating on Whitey and making such a fetish of her ethnicity and the media hadn’t made such preposterous attempts to compare the Obozos to the Kennedys and ‘Camelot’,she wouldn’t be so vulnerable to such pejorative comparisons now would she?

    • Stoutcat says:

Robbins Mitchell, yes, both Michelle and Barack are open to criticism, and you can make all the appropriate “pejorative comparisons” to the Kennedys that you please. Slinging around racist remarks on this blog, however, will not be tolerated.

  5. Gerry Ashley says:

    Sigh…

To quote Rodney King, “Can’t we all just get along?”

It never serves a purpose to lower ones self to the level of those you criticize. It’s true that the Obamas attended a racist church. It’s true that POTUS surrounds himself with facists, socialists and, in some cases, racists.

All we do here is comment on that which we can see and document. For Stoutcat to compliment Mrs. Obama for her classy appearance is as natural as for us to criticize her when she makes a bone-headed comment like, “For the first time in my life, I’m proud of my country,” or when POTUS says… well, virtually anything regarding his political positions.

As for Mrs. Obama last night? She was a vision of loveliness and class. Nobody can take that away from her. And the President? As much as I disagree with his policies, he did cut a dashing figure in his tux. I should look so good.

But I agree with Stoutcat… in that photo, he does look a bit geeky. Almost, dare I say… “Urkel-ish”? And you have to admit, it takes a gorgeous woman to make someone with the ego of Barack Obama look like a goofy schoolboy “who can’t believe his date is the homecoming queen.”

I just hope he didn’t give Prime Minister Singh an Ipod.

    • Gerry Ashley says:

      Verba movent, exempla trahunt

(“Words move people, but examples compel them”)

      This applies to us all.

      Happy Thanksgiving!

  6. Catherine says:

Thank you for posting on this as I can tell by your other posts you are not happy with our current president. I thought she looked radiant, too (I detest the word “classy” as I find it like nails on a chalk board: how about “stylish,” “stunning” or “refined”). The beautiful gown was fabricated of silver-threaded silk in India. Despite the economy, I think State dinners should be lavish affairs as we are presenting our best face to the world.

I figured, however, that the big turkey Rush Limbaugh would negate the whole thing SOMEHOW…oy vey! [Not that I listen to him, only what I hear about what he has said second hand.] Also, thank you for not tolerating racist remarks. It is appalling that they still exist in the 21st century.

  7. [...] actually liked the First Lady when she looked and acted like a First Lady. Sadly, we haven’t seen much of that [...]
