Now that Governor Bill Richardson has slunk back to New Mexico in disgrace… Wait, what am I talking about?! If you’re a public official with a (D) after your name, no such disgrace obtains. Richardson? Still governor. Balgojevich? Still governor. Rangel? Still chairman of Ways and Mean. Frank? Still tormenting Massachusetts chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.
Yes, I know, none of these men has been convicted of anything. Yet. However, time was when behavior embarrassing to country (or at least to Party) would have demanded a quiet resignation letter followed by a stint in the mountains for one’s “health” or something.
But I digress… Due to some truly awful background checking on the part of Team Obama, Richardson is out as Commerce Secretary. Who will Obama’s next choice be? There is some chatter that it could be Washington state governor Christine Gregoire (who won office originally in a way strangely reminiscent of Al Franken’s “victory” in MN). Gregoire is currently out of her office, out of state, and in DC and nobody’s saying what she’s doing there. Maybe they’re “vetting” her for Commerce, maybe she’s part of a larger group of Democratic governors all in DC with their hands out for our tax dollars for their pork, or maybe she’s in DC for her health. Who knows?
An announcement from the Gregoire camp is expected some time today.
