The (Same Old) Story of O

UPDATE: Ed Morrissey has more “Did not!” “Did so!” info.

Axelrod then: Did so!

Q: Has he [Obama] expressed a preference, however on who might replace him in the Senate?

A: He [Obama] has not… I mean, I know he’s talked to the governor, and, uh, you know, he’s,  there are a whole range of names, many of which have surfaced and he’s, uh, I think he has a fondess for a lot of them. (Emphasis added. Boy when he’s off script, he sure sounds like Obama, doesn’t he?)

Local newspaper then:

“CHICAGO, ILL. — Now that Barack Obama will be moving to the White House, his seat in the U.S. Senate representing Illinois will have to be filled.

That’s one of Obama’s first priorities today.

He’s meeting with Governor Rod Blagojevich this afternoon in Chicago to discuss it.”

Obama now: Did not!

“I had no contact with the governor or his office and so I was not aware of what was happening, ” Obama told reporters today in Chicago. “It’s a sad day for Illinois. Beyond that, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment.”

Axelrod now: Oh right, did not!

“I was mistaken when I told an interviewer last month that the President-elect has spoken directly to Governor Blagojevich about the Senate vacancy. They did not then or at any time discuss the subject.”

That’s a pretty vaguely-worded ”mistake” on Axelrod’s part, isn’t it?

Oh, I love the smell of plausible deniability in the morning!

This just reinforces an earlier rant that Alan wrote where he mentioned that Obama will say whatever he thinks needs to be said to attain or protect his goal. I’m not buying Axlerod’s revised story for a moment. If you listen to the tone of his voice in the original interview, it’s clear he’s talking with complete confidence in his statement as being factual. In his, uh, re-uh-revised statement, he uh, didn’t sound like he was speaking from a self-written, uh, script.
