Yeah, the rumors had been circulating. No great surprise really…
As a conservative independent (read: a 1963 democrat and a 1983 Republican now without a party), I really don’t know what to say here.
Just some points about what Gen. Powell said above…
- The general called Obama “Patriotic”… I don’t know about that. Given his background (Ayers), I doubt that Barack (or at least a regular citizen) would be able to get close to the security clearance needed to approach the “nuclear football”. Doesn’t sound all that patriotic to me. (Note: Both Gerry and I have been on the “inside” of this issue, though Gerry being former USAF and NSA, he’s far more in tune with the security workings.)
- Powell said that he got the feeling that McCain was “unsure” about the economy. That’s a major plus in my book. When the best financial minds are “unsure”, I certainly don’t want a politician who “knows it all”.
- Biden as president? I wouldn’t buy a used car from Joe Biden. Would you?
- General Powell said something that kind of creeped me out… He spoke of “all villages” having values. we’re not electing a village leader or a leader of varying villages. We’re electing the President of the United States of America. Given 12 million illegal aliens, parts of the nation where the English language is optional at best and where “sanctuary cities” snub federal law, it’s a pretty safe bet that the concepts of “multiculturalism” and “villages” have pretty much run their course. Just look at the crime rates in Los Angeles (twice the national average) and New Orleans (murder is 7 times the national average). Yeah, diversity goes just so far. We need a President of the United States of America.
- As for the general’s evaluation of Obama’s “limited relationship” with Ayers… One of my physics teachers in college was a communist. I didn’t know about it until I got to his house and looked at the reading material. I left and never went back. Cut and dried. (Imagine going to the bathroom only to discover that the reading material actually was “Workers of the World Unite. Man, was I a chump. But I was still able to figure out stuff faster than Barack.)
- Colin said that Obama is a Christian… Maybe a “20-year Wright” Christian.
Bottom line? We’re simply watching the death of common sense, objectivity, and basic values in this country. Imagine if McCain had even the slightest association with an old, unrepentant abortion-clinic bomber. Would that be so insignificant to the “demobrats”? I doubt it.
Anyway. General Powell, good luck with your choice, and I imagine a good post is coming your way.
It’s a sad day.
